Marina Abramović - The Artist Is Present (June 5, 2o1o)
This past Monday, Marina Abramović completed her three month perfomance piece entitled, The Artist Is Present. The performance consisted of Abramović sitting completely motionless and silent in a chair from museum open to museum close for three months. The cool part is that during that time any museum visitor could come and sit across from Abramović, usually equally as motionless and silent (but not always). The TF Art Crew saw the piece live a number of times and was mesmerized by the sheer gravity of the work. Living in the city, we often miss out or trivialize the one on one interactions that we have on a daily basis and this piece by Abramović brings this issue to the forefront. A post modern conceptual masterpiece, The Artist Is Present questions the role of the artist within the museum space, the notion of the artist as a single entity, and the emergence of a democratic art that anyone can influence. If you didn’t get a chance to stop by MOMA or check out the live video feed check out this great interview from HuffPost.

WOW! New record set in auction. $104.3 million for Alberto Giacometti’s Walking Man I. Sold to an undisclosed telephone buyer, Walking Man I surpasses Giacometti’s current auction record by more than 70 million dollars. Giacometti was a Swiss Italian born artist known for his abstract/elongated bronze forms and surrealist eye. Also winner of a grand prize in sculpture at the Venice Biennale in 1962 , Giacometti is certainly one of the greatest sculptors of our modern era. Cool NYtimes article here.
P.S. The image above is not Giacometti’s Walking Man I, but rather Pablo Picasso’s, Boy with a Pipe. This work by Picasso was the previous auction record holder sold for $104.1 million.

Great artist by the name of James Blagden. Lots of cool projects for MTV, Nike, Esquire, & The New York Times to name a few. Check out his site here. I also found a hilarious video that Blagden designed in conjunction with No Mas about the legendary MLB pitcher Dock Ellis. This is a must see.

Interesting article in The New York Times Arts Section, reviewing art of the past decade. “In the real world the news of the decade was 9/11, two awful wars, staggering corporate greed and the election of an African-American president. In the art world a big event was Mr. Koons showing his sculptures at Versailles. In short, life passed art by. Maybe in the new decade they’ll meet.”

The A.R.T. Gallery proudly presents Selin Amado.
Selin Amado began working with water color when she was 4 years old, thanks to her mom who does extensive work with water colors. She continued on to do woodwork, and eventually began oil painting in high school. Since then, she has experimented with many types of subject matter and style, from hyperrealism to abstract, and is now working on combining the two to produce large-scale psychedelic pieces. Selin is now finishing up her Fine Arts minor and Economics major as a senior at UPenn. For more information, please e-mail selinl@sas.upenn.edu

Selin is SO TALENTED! I want to eat the moose… but you can’t have your moose and eat it too… Do you have more? I would love to see the rest of your work! I’m impressed by the variety especially – it’s cool that you’re working in such a wide range of styles.
wow Selin’s stuff looks amazing! i would pay big money to have that grizzly bear in my home. I also love the dripping colors on the blue background. Keep up the good work!
