Fuck You, Finals

April 25, 2010

We hate finals. We’re angry! The library is fucking packed and we can’t find seats.

Good thing there are some new Crystal Castles and Health songs out.  Does anybody know when Justice is coming back?

Get down to these glitch-punk dance anthems:

Crystal Castles – Celestica

Health – Die Slow (Clark remix)

For people not in a bad mood:

Siriusmo – Gummiband

ArpLine

April 25, 2010

ArpLine are a band from Brooklyn.  One part goth, two parts microkorg, many glitchy industrial beats: I guess you can tell they sound like some ’80s revival stuff floating around these days.  They sound like Bauhaus mixed with The Faint…but with a smile.

Check out their song “Parts Unknown” below.

ArpLine – Parts Unknown

Fang Island

April 24, 2010

Fang Island is a quintet of guys who met at RISD and make, as they say themselves, music that sounds like “everyone high-fiving everyone.” How can you not love that?

Their songs build and break and run wild. At times, they even get a little hectic – but by no means is that a bad thing.

On their self-titled release, it sounds like Fang Island is having way too much fun (just check out that album cover). And, if winning the most popular band at this year’s SXSW is any indication of the bands infectious talent, then praises for the band (like this gushy Pitchfork review) will surely follow.

They will be performing on May 27th at the Barbary for all those who will be summer seshed.

Happy weekend to all:

Fang Island – Daisy

Fang Island – Life Coach

HHJ: Gang Starr Tribute

April 22, 2010

Just a few days ago, April 19th, 47-year-old Keith Elam AKA Gang Starr rapper Guru died after a long fight with multiple myeloma. The group that we all knew and loved was reborn after a shaky start in 1989 when the sole remaining original member, Guru, combined forces with DJ Premier. Within a year their first single “Words I Manifest” came out alongside the album No More Mr. Nice Guy. Over the next sixteen years Gang Starr put out six critically acclaimed albums, including Moment of Truth that debuted at #1 in ’97, helping to build the foundation of hip hop’s Golden age.

We at Tripping Franklins just want to tip our hat to a legend and make sure that a group that stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest is not forgotten.

HHJ: Steely Dan?

April 22, 2010

Hello friends. HHJ would like to formally apologize for missing last weeks post, Fling gave us the itis. But, we are back in action with TWO posts for you on this lovely Thurs-day.

To start you off, HHJ wants to highlight some jams that use samples from your dad’s favorite jazz, funk, rock band, STEELY DAN. Sure, Michael McDonald is creepier than the Lee’s delivery guy, but you gotta admit that the dude has pipes. Steely Dan is a timeless band that is still touring, and still jam, so be sure to check out the originals.

These songs feature some classic hip-hop players from over the years, take a listen!

Penn Band of the Week: New Vo Riche

April 22, 2010

We haven’t done Penn Band of the Week in about 5 months… our bad. Here’s New Vo Riche.  We played their song on Y-Rock last week…

via Sheena Beaston

New Vo Riche was formed in Los Angeles, CA during the summer of 2009, making them quite possibly the newest and quickest addition to my listening repertoire. The trio mixes genres of indie, rock, folk and alternative, that which is demonstrated on their first EP, Rhetoric, which is available for free right here. The band is made up of three guys, two of whom are brothers and the third which might as well be. All three members go to different colleges across the country but they always find time to come together and make music. Dedication!

Don’t Come Empty Handed will be featured on their debut album,Thing Parade, which is slated for a late June release via Century Park Records. There’s something about this tune, its harmonies and soulful expressions that evoke a Chicago’s If You Leave Me Now sort of vibe, and that’s always a legit win in my book.

Tunng

April 21, 2010

Tunng just released their new album “…And Then We Saw Land” earlier this month. They describe their newest release with phrases like “bucolic oddness” and “modernist gleam,” and they are kind of right.

“Hustle” is the first song off the new album it is perfectly minimalist and beautiful.

Tunng – Hustle

Also, describing them as “bucolic” didn’t make sense until I watched this live acoustic version of “Hustle” recorded at Hackney City Farm in London. Hope you guys enjoy.

Immuzikation

April 19, 2010

Looking at his songs, sounds like this man is up to date on his pitchfork highest rated music. He does a pretty fucking good job turning heads though. Great party music.

Easy Like ABC (feat. Jackson 5, Tittsworth, and Greenvelvet) (Jackson 5 remixes are amazing)

One More Time To Pretend (Daftpunk vs. MGMT)

Just A Friend With the Clap (Shirley Ellis vs. Biz Markie)
