Local Natives

March 21, 2010

This five-piece group from LA has been blowing up like crazy these past few months. They have gone from being a relatively unknown band in September/November to receiving Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” award in February.

And even though they cancelled their Philadelphia show in May to play a second night in NYC, TF forgives the Local Natives because we like their music and their strong appreciation for grandiose mustaches.

(FAR LEFT!!!!!)

Pick up their debut album “Gorilla Manor” as soon as humanly possible.

Enjoy:

Local Natives – Stranger Things

Local Natives – Sun Hands

Local Natives – Wide Eyes (Live In Session)

Also check out this incredible Take Away Show from La Blogotechque which follows the band as they play three songs around Paris (the first one is on a carousel).

New MGMT single

March 19, 2010

MGMT have left behind the synths. They’ve picked up some Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd and mixed it with Diamond Dogs-era Bowie>>>and then at the end they start screaming like an ’80s hardcore band<<<.……Their new single is called “Flash Delirium”… and you can download it HERE. (or just click the link above)

UPDATE: STREAM THE NEW ALBUM “CONGRATULATIONS” HERE.

The album is completely different from Oracular Spectacular. The structure is identical to Love‘s “Forever Changes” and is definitely meant for Barrett and Zombies fans over indie rockers.

Broken Bells

March 19, 2010

Can anybody guess what the #1 album on iTunes is today?

If you guessed Justin Bieber, kindly leave.

It is Broken Bells. And, it is awesome.

I was introduced to this album by my heterolifemate and fellow TF blogger, and it has been playing on repeat on my iPod since then. Broken Bells is made up of Shins frontman James Mercer and superproducer Danger Mouse (from Gnarls Barkley and “The Grey Album”). They are down in SXSW this week and getting huge attention from both fans, hipsters and bloggers alike. The whole album is great from top-to-bottom, and it’s short so give it a full listen.

Check it out, you won’t regret it. But, if you do, you probably woke up this morning feeling like P Diddy.

Here are a few of our favorites:

Broken Bells – The High Road

Broken Bells – Vaporize

Broken Bells – Sailing To Nowhere

How To Make It In America

March 18, 2010

How To Make It In America, the show that combines our bro-ish love for Entourage with our hipsterish love for Partypix websites, is pretty pretty good.  Your skinny jean friend is loving all the white Helvetica font and your jappy girlfriend just went “OMG they’re at Avenue!”  Sure, the puerto rican guy is annoying and the lead star is too awkward to function…but the music is GREAT!

Anyway, they came out with a mixtape, which I just found on the counter at Saxbys. You can stream and download the mixtape by CLICKING HERE.

the NEW GARAGE!

March 17, 2010

There’s something happening here. It’s the best ’60s Garage Rock revival since the Elephant 6 Collective.  From San Fran to LA to Austin to New York, bands are re-vamping pre-Beatles Garage Rock, mixing it with ’77 style NY punk, and turning it into something sunny and fun.  It’s not Glo-Fi, not Chillwave… but you can ALWAYS find it on Gorilla Vs. Bear. Let’s take this time to sample what I’m talking about.  Ladies and Gentlemen, the NEW GARAGE rock of the 2010s…

Harlem – Friendly Ghost

The Strange Boys- Be Brave

Pure Ecstasy – Voices

Dum Dum Girls – Jail La La

Happy Birthday – Subliminal Message

Jónsi (yes, the dude from sigur rós)

March 15, 2010

What is the perfect remedy for spring break woes? Yup, new tracks from our favorite Icelandic singer/songwriter Jónsi. (Actually, my second favorite Icelandic behind Coach Wolf Stansson, anybody with me?)

Jónsi is slated to release his new solo album ‘Go‘ on April 6th in the states. So far a couple of songs have leaked to the blogs, and they are awesome. Even better, they are sung in English (score!).

On top of that, Jónsi will be stopping in Philly at the Electric Factory on May 3rd as part of his North American Tour. Despite the start of finals, TF will most definitely be attending.

Check these and keep an eye out for more:

Jónsi – Tornado

Jónsi – Go Do

Jónsi – Boy Lilikoi
