Hercules and Love Affair @ Marbar?!

January 29, 2010

just got a facebook invite telling me that indie dance poppers Hercules and Love Affair will be performing a DJ set at our favorite spot (circa 2007)…Marbar!  the show is on Friday, February 12th.

You will not want to be missing when Hercules and Love Affair come to MARBAR on 40th. Hercules And Love Affair is the result of Andy’s dedication to the Classics: both the myths and legends of Ancient Greece and Rome that captured his imagination as a child, and the timeless club tracks that soundtracked the euphoria and delirium of his adolescence and adult life.

With and interesting blend of house and disco, this will be more than your average DJ set. Don’t think that mix is works?

Tickets are $13 now and $15 at the door, so act fast. This will be one show you won’t want to miss. 18+ only.

The Grizzly Bear Effect

January 29, 2010

Wow! Grizzly Bear is on the prowl. With one of the most prolific indie albums to come out last year, and 7 sold out shows in 5 Australian cities just this month, Grizzly Bear is definitely here to stay.  Listened to Veckatimest* again the other day and couldn’t pull away, great stuff! Check out their website for  some cool videos and a bunch of links to other interesting music blogs.

*If you looked this up in the dictionary to see if it was actually a word you  probably didn’t find anything.  The album refers to a small island in Dukes County, Massachusetts. Indie obscurity at its best.

Ovum Recordings

January 27, 2010

Great  new tracks coming out of the illadelph from dance/acid house pioneers,  OVUM Recordings.  The latest EP, Park to the Slope, is from a 24 year old New York based producer, M A N I K.  Huge support on these tracks from producer/djs Steve Bug, Luca Bacchetti, Joris Voorn, and Jimpster.  Really nice grooves, check it out here. Also, OVUM founder, Josh Wink is about to drop a new remix album entitled, When A Banana Was Just A Banana – Remixed & Peeled.  The original album, When A Banana Was Just A Banana, is being hailed as one of the best electronic albums of last year and this remix album is definitely up there too. You can preview a couple of the tracks at Wink’s website and click here to pre-order the exclusive remix album.

Name the ‘Penn Career Services Blog’

January 21, 2010

Penn Career Services, the champs of annoying emails and useless(?) job fairs, has set up a blog.  They evidently need some help naming it…

We want YOU to help us name our blog! As you can see, our staff has been working hard to create interesting content, but the blog needs a makeover.  We are envious of creative blog names here at Penn like Under the Button, Quakers and Shakers, and Tripping Franklins, so we turn to you for help!  Entering is so easy, even a Princeton student could do it (but actually they can’t…the contest is ONLY open to Penn students, alumni, faculty and staff).

You can win a $25 iTunes gift card if they chose your name. More info HERE.

Names TF will be submitting, based on indie rock titles:

Handjobs for the Quakers

Career Bear

The Jobbz

Cape Career Kwassa Kwassa

The Steve Get-A-Jobs

Karear, Karear

The Employment   (now known as MPMT)

Department of Careers

Joy Employment

Occupatiently Waiting

Yes, the only reason we posted this was because they gave us a shout-out.

So if you don’t have your tickets to the sold out Vampire Weekend show on April 2nd then that sucks.  And if you thought that we were going to give away free tix to the show then that really sucks. But if you want to read a cool article on the band’s latest album then your in luck!  Check the link.

via stereogum

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports:

Memphis police have opened a death investigation, spokesman Jennifer Robinson said. Lindsey was found around 3:30 a.m. in his bed, Robinson said.

He was 29. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Jeremy Lee Lindsey Jr. (May 1, 1980 – January 13, 2010
Jay was what few people have the capacity to be. He created an undeniably classic album that contained so much pain transfered to tape in such an explosive way that it made you feel different after hearing it. He was transgressive and honest. His flaws were something he focused on and overdubbed and distorted until they made you forget who he really was – a person with feelings and a good heart. He loved music and worked hard from a young age to pursue it. He was a self-made and unmade man. I am truly sickened to see him go. - Bradford Cox, 1/13/09
