News From Bonnaroo (UPDATED with MP3s!)

June 15, 2009

In case you didn’t know, the massive four-day drug/music festi known as Bonnaroo is going on right now. I’ve been checking updates from the festival all weekend because, well, I didn’t go. According to Phantasy Tour, Bruce Springsteen just got on stage with ultimately heady dudes in Phish. For you non-phishheads, this is as cool as Jay-Z being on stage with Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and Madonna. (Speaking of Jay-Z, I’m pretty sure he’s been in Bruce’s shoes before.) The Boss accompanied the phab-four on “Mustang Sally”, “Bobby Jean”, and my favorite Brucey song, “Glory Days.

The full setlist:

Set I: AC/DC Bag, NICU, Gotta Jibboo, Punch You in the Eye,Sparkle, Bathtub Gin, Character Zero, Tweezer> The Horse> Silent in the Morning, Run Like An Antelope, Mustang Sally1 2, Bobby Jean2 3, Glory Days2 3

1 Last Played 6/21/1988 (1142 Shows)
2 Bruce Springsteen (Guitar & Vocals)
3 First Time Played (Bruce Springsteen)

The shows still going on as I type, I’ll post pictures and audio/visual tomorrow.

UPDATE: Here’s a great quality MP3 of Bruce and Phish performing the aforementioned “Glory Days” at Bonnaroo last night. Enjoy.

Introducing… Me!

June 13, 2009

n1063440107_30201562_8032

Hello Quakers and Quakettes. Allow me to re-indroduce myself, my name is HOV– no, It’s not. My name is Nicholas (Nicky by friends, peers, and everyone except my mother when she’s  angry). I’m going to be a contributor here on Tripping Franklins, the finest music blog this side of the Schuylkill. We here at TF (see what I did there?) are going to bring you the most up to date news on the music scene on campus and in our wonderful city of Philadelphia. If you are not aware, Philly has an amazing music presence, and it is only continuing to grow.

But in addition to fun MP3s, concert reviews and Penn bands to look out for, I thought some of you would be curious to know what’s going in the music industry these days. Everything you hear talks about the tragedy, the end of the music world as we know it. Well, that’s not entirrrrely true. This semester I wrote a paper, guided by RollingStone contributor Anthony DeCurtis on the state of the industry. If you’re curious, and feel like taking part in this bit of intense self-indulging, go ahead and read it. Hopefully you too can come up with some ideas about how to save us all!

The Day the Music Died: How the Record Companies Lost their Way

While I’m participating in this bit of hedonism, I wanted to let you know what else I’ve got going on. I’ll be keeping a music blog (unrelated to Penn) over at  The Night Bird Calls, so check it out when you’ve got a minute.

Music Department gets a facelift

June 12, 2009

large_classroom-aAs you might notice, the old Music building is boarded-up and looks like a crack-den. Music classes are ALL on the 4th floor of Fisher-Bennet and thats a really far walk! (and a painfully slow elevator ride) The Music Department website has posted some pictures of the new Music building…it kinda looks like the old one. I always thought John Legend should donate lots of money and name it the “Ordinary People Center for Music.”

Check out the pix here.

PENN BAND OF THE WEEK: The Disco Bicuits

June 12, 2009

White people with dreadlocks? Flat-brim baseball caps? Angry hippies? Fake molly? Ah, you must be at a Disco Biscuits concert!

Lets see what Wikipedia says bout these dudes:

The original members of the Disco Biscuits met as undergraduate students at the University of Pennsylvania and left before graduating. Gutwillig and Altman became friends and began to play music together. Once Brownstein joined the group, they began to play at college parties and bars throughout Pennsylvania, making money off the “frat boy” scene. Disco Biscuit set-lists consist of mostly original songs that can be played inverted, unfinished, or “dyslexic”. They played their first shows as the Disco Biscuits at Smokey Joe’s Tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania over the 4th of July weekend in 1995.

Smokes used to look soooo cool!>>>

2 members used to be a ZBT, and I think the other 2 were in Zete (or Zate idk how to spell it).

‘Bisco’ (their way trendier name) is now a totally famous band in the jamband scene. People travel long distances just to see them, and some people even listen to them on their itunes. They host an annual festival called Camp Bisco in upstate NY (MSTRKRFT and Snoop Dogg played last year)

*Funny story: Sammy, the drummer, left the band a couple of years ago to become a doctor. That’s so Penn.

Moral of the story, these guys went from playing Smokes to playing Bonnaroo. Go Bisco! Go Penn bands!

Below are some live Bisco mp3s:

Disco Biscuits: Sabre Dance

Disco Biscuits: Morph Dusseldorf

* a “Disco Biscuit” is a term Doctors use when describing people who overdose on ecstasy in the ER. “Oh, here comes another Disco Biscuit lets get him some water and a mouth-guard.”- Dr. Ev
